Basic Life Support for Medical Professionals | Public European Resuscitation Council

BLS is fundamental to all cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Competence in Basic Life Support is a prerequisite for enrolment for all advanced-level training provided by the European Resuscitation Council. Basic life support (BLS) and, when possible, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) is the first level of care for a person in cardiac arrest. During European Resuscitation Council (ERC) BLS/AED Provider courses, certified instructors will guide and support you in the learning process.

Pre-Course Preparation

  • The ERC BLS course manual and study material is available for online access on the ERC course management system (CoSy) which is a comprehensive virtual learning platform that provides candidates with course material and the pre course assessment and stimulates lifelong learning.
  • The candidates are provided with secure login so that they can access the “CoSy” and complete the learning and assessment prior to attending the course.
  • Access the new version of the online learning module and complete it before the course.
  • Candidates are strongly advised to gain the necessary knowledge before completing the final quiz and attending the course.
  • We encourage candidates to complete the online learning modules and quiz at least 2 days prior to the course.

Hands-On Training - Method of Delivery

The BLS course has a high ratio of instructors to candidates (1:6). The face-to-face teaching is mainly delivered in small groups with hands-on practical skill stations.

  • For certification, you need to obtain 50% for MCQ and be successful in continuous assessment. If you do not obtain 50% or more in the MCQ, but successful in hands on skills, you will be allowed to repeat the MCQ in a future course. If you are unsuccessful in hands on skills, you will have to register again for a new course.
