ERC Basic Life Support Course

An "at-a-glance" guide to the complete registration and certification process in Sri Lanka for half day BLS course.

Your Journey to Certification

Target Audience

Everybody, all ages. Open to first-responders, healthcare providers (caregivers, OT technicians, radiographers, ECG technicians, supportive health staff), and public safety professionals (lifeguards, fire fighters, tri forces & police).

The BLS course is the first level of care for someone in cardiac arrest. BLS is the foundation of all resuscitation training. Competence in BLS is required before moving on to advanced ERC courses (ILS, ALS). Candidates will learn CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and the safe use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Healthcare professionals will be able to practice Ambu ventilation, LMA insertion depending on the group dynamics.

Create an ERC Guest Account

Create a free ERC guest account. Ensure your First Name, Middle Name, Surname, and Email are entered correctly for your certificate.

Access CoSy (Virtual Learning Environment)

You will be added to the CoSy on the first available date from your choice, as mentioned in the online BLS application form. You will receive an email from ERC CoSy with the details.

  • For BLS, the VLE consists of mandatory MCQ which you must complete before coming to the course.
  • Spend sufficient time to learn and complete all lessons.
  • Complete the questionnaire in one go and achieve a minimum of 50%.
  • Each question has only one correct answer and you can try as many times as necessary.
  • You must complete this at least 3 days before the course.
  • Your course director will monitor your performance on this questionnaire in view of further coaching during the hands-on session.
  • You will not be able to attend the course if you have not achieved a minimum of 50% for the mandatory final test. A different date will be notified later.

Coaching

A coach (ERC Instructor) will be assigned to you, who will guide you during the precourse period.

Attend the Half-Day Course

Attend the hands-on session with a 1:6 instructor ratio.

Assessment & Certification

You are assessed continuously on chest compressions, mouth to mouth ventilation, and safe use of AED. You can download a 3-year valid ERC BLS soft-copy certificate via the CoSy platform.

About the Course

BLS is fundamental to all cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Competence in Basic Life Support is a prerequisite for enrolment for all advanced-level training provided by the European Resuscitation Council.

Basic life support (BLS) and, when possible, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) is the first level of care for a person in cardiac arrest. During European Resuscitation Council (ERC) BLS/AED Provider courses, certified instructors will guide and support you in the learning process.

How the Course Runs

The face-to-face teaching is mainly delivered in small groups with hands-on practical skill stations.

  • Hands-on training with an instructor-to-candidate ratio of 1:6.
  • Small-group learning environment.
  • Focus on practical skill stations.

Assessment & Certification

  • Continuous Assessment: Instructors assess skills throughout the course (cardiac arrest recognition, high-quality CPR, AED use, recovery position, choking).
  • Certification Requirements: Must get ā‰„ 50% in the final MCQ and pass the continuous skills assessment.
  • If MCQ is <50% but hands-on skills are successful, the MCQ can be repeated in a future course.
  • If hands-on skills are unsuccessful, you must register for a new course.
  • Instructor Potential: Candidates who excel may be nominated for BLS Instructor training (BLS-IP).

  • First-responders, healthcare providers (caregivers, OT technologists, radiographers), public safety professionals (lifeguards, firefighters, police), etc.
  • No specific entry requirements.

  • Duration: 5 hours (without breaks)
  • Certificate Validity: 3 years
  • Venue: College of Anaesthesiologists & Intensivists of Sri Lanka, No. 437/1C Cotta Road, Rajagiriya.
