Your Journey to Certification

Target Audience

For healthcare providers at all stages (doctors, nurses, paramedics, pre-interns) to manage critically ill patients and early cardiac arrest until the resuscitation team arrives.

Builds on BLS with airway techniques, ECG recognition, and safe defibrillation; first-line training and stepping stone to ALS.

Proceed only if you already completed ERC BLS. If not, register for ERC BLS first.

Apply Online

Submit the ILS application form. Expect a confirmation email; check spam/junk if missing. If requirements are met, a payment link will be sent to you. Please complete payment via that link.

Create ERC Guest Account

Open a free ERC guest account with accurate name and email details for certificates.

Access CoSy (VLE)

Added to CoSy on the first available date you selected; watch for the ERC CoSy email.

  • Complete mandatory ILS content (subset of ALS VLE); extra "comfort zone" items are optional.
  • Finish all mandatory chapters and the final test (score ≥ 75%) at least 3 days before the course.
  • Unlimited attempts; each question has one correct answer.
  • Coaches monitor results to tailor hands-on coaching; incomplete/failed tests defer your course date.

Coaching Support

An ERC instructor coach is assigned to guide you during the precourse period.

Attend Pre-Course Zoom

Mandatory 1-hour Zoom session held 1-2 weeks before the in-person course.

Attend the Face-to-Face Course

Intensive hands-on course (1:3 instructor ratio) with skill stations, simulations, and rapid feedback.

Assessment & Certification

Continuous assessment on airway, CPR, safe defibrillation, and teamwork. Successful candidates receive a 3-year ERC ILS certificate via CoSy; those not meeting standards may receive ERC BLS at faculty discretion.

Tips to Stay on Track

  • Finish mandatory VLE chapters and the test at least 3 days before the course.
  • Use the coach feedback to target weak areas before the face-to-face day.
  • Join the Zoom prep session with questions from your VLE practice.

About the Course

The Immediate Life Support course is a multidisciplinary 1-day course which provides the essential knowledge and skills that are important in the initial phase of treating a critically ill patient who needs resuscitation. Therefore, it is suited for the training of healthcare providers at all stages and levels.

This course meets the requirements of those who need more advanced skills than those taught during Basic Life Support (BLS) courses but who do not require Advanced Life Support skills such as team leadership.

What You'll Learn

  • Recognise & treat the deteriorating patient using a structured ABCDE approach.
  • Standardised CPR & safe defibrillation.
  • Airway management in a cardiac arrest.
  • Treatment of shockable & non-shockable rhythms.
  • Non-technical skills: teamwork, communication.

How the Course Runs

The face-to-face teaching is mainly delivered in small groups with hands-on practical skill stations and scenario-based simulations.

  • Hands-on training with a high instructor-to-candidate ratio (1:3 to 1:6).
  • Small-group learning environment.
  • Focus on practical skill stations and scenario simulations.

Assessment & Certification

  • Continuous Assessment: Observed throughout the course by instructors, covering airway management, CPR, safe defibrillation, and team member skills.
  • Certification: Successful candidates receive an ERC ILS certificate (soft copy) valid for 2 years. If performance is not up to ILS standards, a BLS certificate may be issued instead.
  • CPD: The course is recognized for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Instructor Potential: Candidates who excel may be nominated as Instructor Potentials (IPs) and offered a place in the ERC Generic Instructor Course (GIC).

Who Should Apply

  • Healthcare professionals at all stages and levels who need more advanced skills than BLS, but not full ALS team-lead skills.
  • Target audience includes nurses, paramedics, pre-interns, community doctors, etc., who are competent in BLS.
